Featured New Artist: C. S. Ling
C. S. Ling lives on the sunny island of Singapore where she majored in Interactive Design at Nanyang Polytechnic. Her love for travel, wildlife and photography has evolved over many years into her chosen photography field. “I’ve been fascinated with animals since young. I got bit by the travel bug as I grew older and that eventually lead to me to photography. To be able to combine all three passions into one, that’s the best job in the world.” One of Ling’s all-time heroes is Sir David Attenborough. “His life-long contribution & dedication in educating millions of people around the world in his legendary BBC series, never fails to inspire me to learn more and seek a deeper understanding about the natural world around us.”
Nature and wildlife photography in the Asia-Pacific region is Ling’s specialty. “My photography explores the theme of love, life and freedom in the natural world. To translate natural history into a photographic art form (more than just a record shot), I’m always very attentive to every little detail when I’m out in the field. From light, color, composition, background settings and that special something that captures the spirit of the wildlife, in a fleeting 1/1000 of a second. I feel that to be able to translate natural history into a photographic art form, is a wonderful way to share the rare sights of nature and the diversity of life that people seldom get to “see”. The mischievous glint from the corner of the baby snow monkey’s eyes; the clumsiness of young swans learning to land on the slippery ice; A ray of light shining through the watercolor landscape of Jiu Zhai Gou, like a Chinese painting. Nature just never fails to amaze me again and again and I hope that my photos will accomplish that for others too.”
In April Ling will be traveling to Taiwan for three of the most spectacular natural wonders at the same window of time and place. Migration of purple milkweed crow butterfly (one of the only two migrating butterfly species in the world, the other being the monarchs), migration of grey-faced buzzard and white and pink cherry blossoms. She will also return to Borneo frequently to follow the Borneo Pygmy Elephant herd’s migration through the fragmented forest, and revisiting New Zealand, Malaysia and China for an array of other subjects.
